Meta Platforms to Test Direct Messaging on Threads in Competitive Push
Meta Platforms (META) announced plans to integrate direct messaging into its Threads app, targeting user growth in key Asian markets like Hong Kong and Thailand. The feature, currently unencrypted, aims to eliminate the need for users to switch to Instagram for private conversations—a strategic MOVE against rivals like X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok.
Threads, launched in 2023 as a Twitter alternative, now boasts 350 million monthly active users. Meta has aggressively linked Threads to Instagram''s ecosystem while expanding global advertising access, though it downplays near-term revenue expectations. Research firm Emarketer projects Threads will surpass X in U.S. monthly users by 2025, growing 17.5% to 60.5 million as X declines by 14.4%.
